Amongst 3104 diabetes-free participants of the Framingham Offspring Study, the age-adjusted 8-year incidence rate of diabetes in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s was 2.0%, 3.0% and 3.7% among women and 2.7%, 3.6% and 5.8% among men, respectively. Compared with the 1970s, the age- and sex-adjusted odds ratio for diabetes was 1.40 in the 1980s and 2.05 in the 1990s, most of the increase in diabetes incidence occurring in subjects with body mass index ≥30kg/m2. The authors recommend that changes in diabetes incidence be carefully monitored should obesity trends continue to increase, since in this community-based study of middle-aged adults, a doubling in the incidence of type 2 diabetes was observed over the last 30 years.
