Among 2516 adolescents from Minnesota followed from 1999 up to 2004, the prevalence of overweight (28.7% in females; 28.0% in males) remained high throughout adolescence. There was a longitudinal increase in the use of unhealthy weight control behaviors in both sexes, including extreme weight control behaviors in both sexes during adolescence. During the observation period, use of diet pills doubled in high school females, with one fifth of females in late adolescence reporting diet pill intake.
