High prevalence of insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome among overweight and obese French children - (26/06/06)
Among 308 overweight and obese French children, the prevalence of the insulin resistance (IR) syndrome and the metabolic syndrome was 42.5% and 15.9%, respectively. The most common component was abdominal obesity (95.8%) followed by IR (71.8%) and elevated systolic blood pressure (28.6%) whereas the frequency of glucose tolerance disorders was low (3.6%). The insulin resistance syndrome was more prevalent than the metabolic syndrome. Resistance to insulin was not a result from age-related changes at puberty, since data were adjusted from reference values taking gender and age into account. IR appears to play a major role, preceding other metabolic complications in obese French children. In addition, the data show that genetic susceptibility was somehow higher from the maternal line, suggesting either certain additional intra-uterine and/or mitochondrial factor(s) at play in the metabolic abnormalities.
