Serum ferritin as a surrogate marker of insulin resistance in subjects with hepatitis C and metabolic syndrome - (09/10/06)
In 10383 subjects from the Third National Health Nutrition and Examination Survey, hepatitis C (HCV) was associated with both HOMA insulin resistance and serum ferritin but not with metabolic syndrome (ATP III criteria). The adjusted HOMA insulin level was higher among subjects with HCV and metabolic syndrome than among those without HCV and metabolic syndrome, and serum ferritin was a strong predictor of HOMA insulin resistance. So serum ferritin, which can easily be obtained with routine blood tests, may possibly be used in clinical practice as a surrogate marker for insulin resistance in subjects with HCV and metabolic syndrome.
