Psoriasis associated with diabetes in a population-based cross-sectional study
A cross-sectional population-based study was conducted using the database from the Clalit Health Services (CHS), the largest health provider organization in Israel, in order to investigate the association between psoriasis and diabetes. A total of 851 patients with psoriasis from the CHS chronic diseases registry and 74,987 control subjects without psoriasis were analyzed. After adjusting for age, the proportion of diabetes was significantly higher in patients with psoriasis as compared to the control group, and similar in men and in women. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that psoriasis was significantly associated with diabetes, independently of age and gender. Since both conditions may share underlying risk factors, dermatologists taking care of patients with psoriasis should be aware of such association with its practical implicit screening implication, and advise patients to reduce additional risk factors such as smoking, hypertension and dyslipidaemia.
