Significant association between Helicobacter pylori seropositivity and metabolic syndrome in the Japanese population
Previous reports suggest an association between seropositivity to Helicobacter (H.), cardiovascular diseases and metabolic syndrome components scoring. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to assess the association between previous H. pylori infection and metabolic syndrome in a large Japanese population including 5488 men and 1906 women. In both men and women, H. pylori seropositivity significantly increased with age. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that there was a significant and independent association between H. pylori seropositivity and metabolic syndrome (odds ratio: 1.39, 95% confidence interval 1.18-1.62). Furthermore, H. pylori was significantly associated with higher systolic blood pressure, lower HDL cholesterol, and higher LDL cholesterol. In conclusion, H. pylori infection was significantly associated with metabolic syndrome in this large sample of the Japanese population.
