High prevalence of metabolic syndrome in an urban Indian diabetic population
This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (NCEP ATP III) among an urban Indian diabetic population. Among 5088 patients with type 2 diabetes from four centres across Mumbai and included in the study, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 77.2%, and significantly higher among women (87.7%) than men (69.3%). In men, the most prevalent risk factors for metabolic syndrome were hypertension followed by hypertriglyceridaemia and in women, central obesity followed by hypertension. According to these results, metabolic syndrome is highly prevalent in the urban Indian diabetic population. The authors suggest that the presence of a metabolic syndrome should be identified by regular screening among the general population, so as to intervene before progression to type 2 diabetes.
