HDL as independent protector against cardiovascular risk at all levels of risk
The study was designed to clarify some previous inconsistencies regarding the role of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) as a CVD protective factor in 104,961 subjects of both genders without pre-existing coronary heart disease (CHD) from the SCORE dataset who were pooled from seven European prospective studies. After adjusting for confounding factors, Cox proportional hazard model analysis revealed a strong, graded, independent, and inverse relationship between HDL-C and both CVD and CHD mortality. The relationship was significant across all CVD risk strata and age groups.
