Adherence to the DASH diet may help prevent type 2 diabetes mellitus
To date, little is known about the impact of the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) lifestyle intervention on incident type 2 diabetes mellitus. The study was designed to evaluate the association of DASH diet (sodium-restricted and rich in vegetables, fruits, and low-fat dairy products) with incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus among 862 participants of the multiethnic Insulin Resistance Atherosclerosis Study who completed a 1-year food frequency questionnaire at baseline. In Whites, there was an inverse association between adherence to the DASH dietary pattern and type 2 diabetes. This association became significant for the most extreme contrast of the DASH score, after adjusting for covariates. In Blacks or Hispanics, there was no association between adherence to the DASH diet and incident type 2 diabetes. Thus, adherence to the DASH diet may have the potential to contribute to lifestyle prevention of type 2 diabetes.
