Dairy products, grains, and fruits/vegetables intakes inversely associated with central obesity among adolescents
This cross-sectional study involving 3761 children and 1803 adolescents enrolled in the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey was designed to explore mean intakes of food groups associated with central obesity. In younger children, no relationship between central adiposity and mean intakes of dairy products, fruits, vegetables or grains was found, whereas there was a positive association with meat intake in boys. In adolescent boys and girls, central body fat was inversely associated with mean intakes of dairy products and grains, with adolescent boys in the highest central adiposity quartile consuming less fruits and vegetables, and those in the lowest central adiposity quartile consuming less meat.
