Metabolic syndrome associated with periodontal disease in Japanese adults
There is a well-documented association between diabetes and periodontal disease. Metabolic syndrome has also been linked to periodontal disease although only limited evidence on the relationship is available. A total of 1070 Japanese subjects aged 40 to 70 years participating in health and periodontal examinations were included in this analysis aimed at assessing the relationship between each individual metabolic syndrome components and their score with periodontal status defined by the Community Periodontal Index (CPI). Among the individual components of metabolic syndrome, high blood pressure and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were significantly associated with having a high CPI code (code 4). After adjusting for confounding variables, there was a significantly higher prevalence of high CPI code in subjects presenting with three to five individual components of metabolic syndrome compared to those without components. These study findings support the suspected but unproven relationship between metabolic syndrome and periodontal disease.
