Chronic work stress linked to general and central obesity
In the so-called Whitehall II population-based study including 6895 men and 3413 women aged 35-55 years, self-reported cumulative work stress was measured on 4 occasions over a 19-year period using the Job Strain Questionnaire to investigate the link between chronic work stress and obesity.

Dietary energy density as an independent predictor of obesity, elevated fasting insulin, and metabolic syndrome in US adults
Fiber content, energy density and/or water content affect the satietogenic properties of foods. High-density palatable foods are potentially associated with lesser satiety and/or increased daily caloric intake. A cross-sectional study using representative data of US adults aged =20 years from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (n=9688) was conducted to assess whether dietary energy density of foods was associated with obesity and related disorders including insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome (NECP-ATP III criteria).

Dramatic increase in the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome in Finnish young adults
In a longitudinal population-based follow-up study of 2182 healthy Finnish young adults aged 24-39 years, the current prevalence of the metabolic syndrome according to the definitions of the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP), the European Group for the Study of Insulin Resistance (EGIR) and the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) was 13.0%, 9.8% and 14.3%, respectively.
