LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon successful completion of this activity,
the clinician will be better able to:

  1. List the criteria used for diagnosing metabolic syndrome
  2. List the most current guidelines and describe the available diagnostic tools used to assess metabolic syndrome risk factors
  3. Develop a systematic risk factor reduction plan for patients with diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia and other metabolic syndrome criteria
  4. Apply various therapies to treat metabolic syndrome and reduce risk factors in the context of primary and secondary prevention

STENO-2
(Observational Follow-Up)

Effect of a multifactorial intervention on mortality in type 2 diabetes

Outcome: Time to death from any cause.

Number of participants: 160 patients (130 in the observational follow-up) with type 2 diabetes and microalbuminuria at entry.

Comparison: Intensive vs standard treatment (intensive treatment: stepwise implementation of behavioural modification, pharmacological therapy targeting hyperglycaemia, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and microalbuminuria, along with cardiovascular disease prevention with low-dose aspirin). Mean treatment period of 7.8 years, followed by a mean observational period of 5.5 years.

Design: Randomized, open, parallel trial.

Mission of the Metabolic
Syndrome Institute

Created in 2003, the Metabolic Syndrome Institute is an independent and not for profit association. Its members are international experts in lipid metabolism, diabetes, heart disease, endocrinology obesity, genetics, epidemiology, basic research and health economics. Being the first association totally devoted to the dissemination of knowledge about the metabolic syndrome, the Metabolic Syndrome Institute will provide an international multidisciplinary approach to a worldwide public health problem.
